Professional 2D CAD that runs on Linux
Most professional CAD stops at Windows and the Mac. isogram runs on Linux as the same app, with the same tools and the same files, for architects and engineers who'd rather not keep another computer just for drawings.
What runs on Linux
All of it. There's no cut-down Linux edition: the drawing tools, sheets, dimensions to ISO and ASME, the studies, the assistant and shared projects are the same as on a Mac or a Windows PC.
Your machine
64-bit Linux on Intel, AMD or ARM. isogram comes as an AppImage that starts without installing anything else, and as .deb and .rpm packages, each built for both kinds of processor.
Your drawings are ordinary files on your disk, and drafting works without an internet connection. Only the assistant and shared projects need one.
Files that travel
isogram opens DWG files from R13 to the 2018 format, and DXF, and saves both. A drawing made on Linux opens the same way on a colleague's Mac or Windows PC, and a DWG you save opens in AutoCAD. More on DWG.
The AutoCAD commands, on Linux
The command line takes the AutoCAD aliases, L, PL, TR, EX, O and the rest, and F3, F8 and F10 do what they do in AutoCAD. See the full list.
Other 2D CAD on Linux
- LibreCAD. Free and open source. It reads DWG and saves DXF.
- QCAD. Open source, with DWG support in the paid QCAD Professional.
- BricsCAD. Paid CAD built around DWG, for Windows, Mac and Linux, with 2D and 3D.
What isogram brings is a drafting app that's the same everywhere your team works, with the commands you know, a drawing's whole history, and sheets checked against the standard before they're issued.
When you can try it
isogram arrives in December. Testing starts with the alpha in October, on the Mac and Windows first, and Linux follows in an update. Join the list and we'll email you when there's a build for you. It's free to test, and your drawings carry over to every release.
Questions
Which distributions does it run on?
The AppImage runs on most 64-bit distributions. There's a .deb for Debian, Ubuntu and the distributions built on them, and an .rpm for Fedora, openSUSE and theirs.
Does it run on ARM?
Yes. Every Linux package is built for both 64-bit Intel or AMD and 64-bit ARM.
Is isogram open source?
No. It's made by Nowei OÜ, a company in Estonia.
Can I share drawings with people on Windows and Mac?
Yes. It's the same app and the same files on all three, and DWG and DXF go to people on other CAD software.
